Memory Cards
What is a Memory Card?
Memory cards are small, versatile storage favorites for all sorts of devices. Memory cards provide reliable options for storing photos, music, and other important digital data you may have. They come in a range of storage capacities and can be used with many different types of devices, including smartphones, gaming consoles, DSLR cameras, and more.
What are the different types of Memory Cards?
The main types of memory cards available include SD (Secure Digital), Micro SD, Portable Flash Drives, and CompactFlash Drives.
What is the difference between SD and Micro SD cards?
SD (Secure Digital) cards are larger than Micro SD cards and are commonly used in cameras, camcorders, and other devices that require removable storage. Micro SD cards, as the name suggests, are smaller and are commonly used in smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices.
Solid-State Drives
What is a Solid-State Drive?
An SSD is a non-volatile storage device that stores and accesses data more quickly than traditional hard drives, allowing computers to run faster. An SSD works with the computer's Random Access Memory (RAM) and processor to access and make use of stored data, such as an operating system, documents, or movies.
What does SSD stand for?
SSD stands for Solid State Drive
What is the difference between an SSD and an HDD?
Solid State drives use flash storage like a USB flash drive. They have no moving parts and operate much quicker than regular hard drives. HDDs use a circular disc that spins any time you save or open a program and a read-write head.
What is an M.2 SSD?
M.2 is a newer form factor that allows the SSD to plug in to the motherboard directly without any cables. There are currently two types: NVME M.2 and SATA M.2 drives.
What is the difference between NVME M.2 and SATA M.2?
NVME drives utilize the PCIe bus of a computer and provide faster data transfer speeds than standard SATA connections. SATA III speeds have a max around 600 MB/s and NVME speeds can reach upwards of 3,500 MB/s.
RAM
What is RAM?
RAM, or random access memory, is a type of computer memory that stores data temporarily so it can be quickly accessed by the device’s processor. It helps devices like computers, smartphones and tablets run multiple applications at once and allows them to open and manage files, games and apps quickly. When the device turns off, any unnecessary data stored in RAM will be erased.
What are the different types of RAM?
There are two primary types of RAM, commonly known as static random-access memory (SRAM) and dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). SRAM and DRAM are memory chips that process data in different ways.
SRAM: Static random-access memory keeps data for as long as it has power. Using SRAM is often faster and uses less energy than DRAM, but it's typically more expensive.
DRAM: Dynamic random-access memory refreshes every few milliseconds while gathering and holding data. While DRAM requires and uses more power than SRAM, it's usually considered more practical because it can hold more data.
What is ROM and how is it different from RAM?
ROM stands for read-only memory. It typically stores all the applications a computer or computing device requires for starting up. RAM is a volatile memory, which means it temporarily stores the files if there's power. ROM is a non-volatile memory that can store information permanently without refreshing content periodically.
What is the difference between low storage space and low memory?
Low memory occurs when there is simply not enough RAM to run the processes or software you need. To solve this issue, try restarting your computer, which can reduce the amount of memory being used. On the other hand, low storage space indicates that there are too many applications, programs or files stored on the hard drive. You can resolve this by uninstalling unused programs and permanently deleting unnecessary files, or replacing the hard drive completely. Storage refers to a permanent place for digitally-stored data and includes both main memory (RAM & ROM) and cache memory.
How much RAM do I need for my computer?
The amount of RAM (random access memory) you need depends on what you use your computer for. For basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing, 4GB of RAM should suffice. For more demanding tasks such as gaming or video editing, 8GB or more is recommended.
