RAM and SSD Prices Are Dropping on Amazon, Will the Trend Continue?
Shoppers may have noticed something encouraging recently: prices for certain RAM kits and SSDs have started falling on Amazon.

The recent reductions on Amazon are real, but they are not affecting every product equally.

As of August 27, it showed DDR4 prices unchanged over one and three months, SATA SSD prices down over three months, and DDR5 and NVMe SSD prices still increasing. Why Can Amazon Prices Fall While Wholesale Prices Rise?
Amazon prices do not move in perfect synchronization with DRAM and NAND chip prices.
Promotions and Seller Competition
Amazon sellers frequently adjust prices to win visibility, clear inventory, match competitors, or improve sales rankings. A temporary discount may reflect a seller’s inventory strategy rather than a reduction in manufacturing costs.
Older Inventory
A distributor or marketplace seller may have purchased inventory before the latest wholesale increase. That stock can sometimes be sold below the price of newly manufactured replacement inventory.
Once the older supply is exhausted, the next shipment may arrive at a higher cost.
Weak Consumer Demand
High prices have caused many consumers to postpone upgrades. Retailers may respond with discounts when products remain in inventory longer than expected.
TrendForce says high component costs are suppressing demand for notebooks and other consumer products. Buyers have also become more resistant to additional price increases. Its third-quarter outlook describes weakening consumer demand and reduced tolerance for higher prices.
Different Products Follow Different Markets
An inexpensive SATA SSD and a high-capacity enterprise NVMe SSD do not face the same demand.
Similarly, DDR4, DDR5, laptop memory, server memory, and high-performance desktop kits can follow different pricing patterns. A decline in one category does not mean every form of memory is becoming cheaper.
What Is Happening to SSD Prices?
Of the two categories, consumer SSDs currently have the better chance of experiencing selective discounts.
TrendForce’s August NAND update showed signs of stabilization within the upstream market:
- Some lower-capacity TLC NAND prices were flat
- QLC NAND prices were flat as buyers resisted higher costs
- Certain large-capacity products continued to experience mild increases
TrendForce characterized the market as consolidating at a high price level.
This helps explain why Amazon can offer attractive prices on selected drives without indicating a complete market reversal.
Looking further ahead, NAND supply is expected to grow as manufacturers introduce higher-layer products and additional production capacity. TrendForce forecasts that supply conditions could become meaningfully easier during the second half of 2027. Its NAND outlook projects a transition toward a more balanced market.
SSD prices may therefore continue to fluctuate in the near term, with occasional good deals appearing before broader downward pressure potentially develops later in 2027.
What Is Happening to RAM Prices?
The outlook for RAM is less favourable.
AI servers require enormous quantities of high-bandwidth memory and conventional server memory. Manufacturers are dedicating more resources to these fast-growing and profitable markets, restricting the production capacity available for ordinary desktop and laptop RAM.
New DRAM manufacturing capacity is under development, but semiconductor facilities take considerable time to construct, equip, qualify, and bring into full production.
TrendForce expects DRAM demand to continue exceeding supply during 2027. It does not anticipate substantial output from new capacity until 2028. Its 2027 outlook explains why the DRAM and NAND markets are expected to diverge.
This does not mean Amazon RAM prices can never decline. Sellers can still discount individual products, especially DDR4 modules or less popular configurations. However, the underlying market does not currently indicate a lasting, across-the-board RAM price reduction.
How to Tell Whether an Amazon Discount Is a Good Deal
A percentage discount alone can be misleading because the displayed “regular” price may have changed recently.
Before purchasing:
- Check the product’s price history instead of relying only on the crossed-out price.
- Compare the exact model number across several retailers.
- Check whether Amazon, the manufacturer, or a marketplace seller is fulfilling the order.
- Confirm warranty eligibility in your location.
- Compare prices between products with the same capacity and performance class.
- Confirm compatibility with your computer or device.
- For SSDs, consider NAND type, endurance, controller, and warranty—not only capacity.
